You and your kids will be fascinated by this exceptional and unconventional tour! We invite you to have fun painting your matryoshka-doll under the supervision and with instructions of a professional artist!
A matryoshka doll, also known as a Russian nesting doll, Stacking dolls, or a Russian doll, is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. The name "matryoshka," literally "little matron," is a diminutive form of Russian female first name "Matryona" or "Matriosha." A set of matryoshkas consists of a wooden figure which separates, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside, which has, in turn, another figure inside of it, and so on. Traditionally the outer layer is a woman, dressed in a sarafan, a long and shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress. The figures inside may be of either gender; the smallest, innermost doll is typically a baby turned from a single piece of wood. Much of the artistry is in the painting of each doll, which can be very elaborate. The toys often follow a theme; the themes may vary, from fairy tale characters to Soviet leaders. Matryoshka dolls are commonly referred to as "babushka dolls," babushka, meaning "grandmother" or "old woman."
Detailed Program
This master class can be incorporated into almost any tour program. Tour duration is about 3 hrs, but it can be more or less depending on how much time you have (but recommended minimum time is 2,5-3 hrs). This activity is suitable for both kids and their parents who like to paint and have fun with their children! Those who are not engaged in the process can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with something delicious!
We recommend scheduling the tour for the first half of the day because when you finish with your handmade dolls, it's best to let them dry. Towards the end of the day, families usually pick up their creations. If you have several days in the city, you can pick dolls up the next morning. Of course, you can take them with you right away, but it's highly recommended to let them dry (after that, they will be varnished).
The matryoshka painting master class is a perfect break during the sightseeing day to keep your kids entertained. It is an excellent way to explore Russian traditions and learn how to create a truly unique Russian Matryoshka doll, which will be your handmade memorable present from Russia!
