The construction of Aarhus Cathedral began in the 12th century, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, St. Clemens. The cathedral is situated on the port side of the central square in the inner city. The church can seat around 1200 people. Aarhus Cathedral has a number of fresco paintings dating from the 1470 to 1520. The paintings of St Christopher and St Clement are the tallest in the country. Other figures include St Michael and St George with the dragon. The cathedral has a wonderful altar piece carved by the famous Lübeck sculptor and painter Bernt Notke. It was dedicated on Easter Sunday 1479 and is one of Denmark's great treasures. The altarpiece is unusual in that it has movable sections, so different scenes may be viewed during the liturgical calendar.
It is a small underground museum, located at the square of Skt. Clemens Market. It is located beneath the Nordea bank building and on the site of an archaeological excavation of the 1960s, 3 m (9.8 ft) below street level. The excavations revealed various Viking Age structures, items, and parts of a human skeleton. The museum provides information regarding the history of Viking Age Aarhus.
The name ARoS refers to the Old Danish name of the city Aarhus, Áros, while the capitalized letters of the name hint at the Latin word for art, namely ars. It is the oldest public art museum in Denmark outside of Copenhagen. On 8 April 2004, ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum opened with exhibitions in a brand new modern building. ARoS has a large art collection with works from the Golden Age until today, a changing selection of which are on display in the museum halls. Alongside, themed and changing exhibitions of both Danish and international artists are presented.
The Old Town is an open-air town museum located in the Aarhus Botanical Gardens. In 1914 the museum opened as the world's first open-air museum of its kind, concentrating on town culture rather than village culture. Today the museum consists of 75 historical buildings collected from 20 townships in all parts of the country. The small town of chiefly half-timbered structures originally erected between 1550 and the late 19th century itself is the main attraction but most buildings are open for visitors; rooms are either decorated in the original historical style or organized into larger exhibits of which there are 5 regular with varying themes. In all there are some 27 rooms, chambers or kitchens, 34 workshops, 10 groceries or shops, 5 historical gardens, a post office, a customs office, a school and a theatre. There are several groceries, diners and workshops spread throughout the town with museum staff working in the roles of town figures i.e. merchant, blacksmith etc. adding to the illusion of a "living" town.
