This is the time for lunch? You are very hungry after the tour around the city and you want to try the best of Dutch cuisine…Making a choice is very difficult, isn’t it? Because here are so many delicious dishes!

We here at ULKO Tours prepared for you TOP 5 meals you might try while you are in Holland.

1. Raw herring

Every visitor to Amsterdam should give it a go even though raw herring may sound a little scary. Haringhandels (herring carts) serve up this Dutch speciality all over the city. The fish is served in a small sandwich with pickles and onions. The best time to try raw herring is between May and July when the herring is said to be at its sweetest.

2.  Cheese

Don’t go home without visiting one of Amsterdam’s many ‘kaas’ shops or markets and tasting some Gouda, Geitenkaas or Maasdammer. Cheese is a big business in the Netherlands. It is served as sliced and each place is popular for its kind of cheese. For an introduction to the most popular Dutch cheeses, stop by the Cheese Museum. Next, visit the Reypenaer Tasting Room for a professionally-guided tasting of their award-winning cheese. In the Negen Straaties (9 Streets) there is Kaaskamer that has shelves stuffed with cheese from the Netherlands and abroad.

3. Bitterballen

Delicious, deep fried crispy meatballs, traditionally served with mustard for dipping. They are the ultimate in Dutch pub snacks. They can be found both on the menu at most Amsterdam drinking establishments and at a traditional Dutch feast during some holiday.

4. Stamppot

Translated literally as ‘mash pot’, this traditional Dutch dish is the ultimate comfort food for any time of the year. Stamppot involves mashed potatoes with vegetables. Usually, they are sauerkraut, carrot, onion or kale. Important to say that this dish is a real salvation for a tourist with a small budget. Stamppot is hearty and not expensive.

5. Stroopwafels & Appeltaart

Stroopwafels (waffle cookies made of two thin layers of dough sticky syrup in the middle) or Appeltaart (a Dutch apple pie) are the best way how to finish your lunch. They are both good with a cup of coffee or tea.
